I am really beginning to wonder if I have the breeds I thought I bought. I have never been able to tell the Isa Browns from the Golden Comets. And the Smokey Pearls are much whiter than I expected. One of them recently went very dark on her comb and wattle, i thought i was going to lose her but she seems to be doing ok. It reddens if i pick her up then goes back to dark. They look much like my Astra White hen except she has larger thinner comb and wattles. Is is because the are still juveniles? I did lose one of the red girls to a racoon. She had more golden in her tail than the ones I have left. But are there two different breeds here? The first picture is the smokey pearls and yes I know there is a RIR and an olive egger in the second picture with the other three.

It looks like you got the correct breeds. Gold comets and ISA browns look similar because they’re both red sex links. The smokey pearls are leghorn crosses, so will look similar to austra whites.

Your Smokey Pearls look like a cross between mine. All of mine are so light gray they look just about white with black spots. I have 3 with the red comb/waddle, but one has jet black skin. I posted her yesterday with the same question because she's so dark.

That one looks like my girl whose comb and wattle changed from pink to grayish black. I thought she had a lung or heart problem and would soon pass but she is still doing ok.

Dotty doesn't change color at all, she stays the inky black color. She was the only one that had gray legs as a chick, just got darker as she matured. I'm now thinking it's more of a recessive gene from the chickens crossed to create the Smokey Pearls.

Both of mine have grey legs, the other one went red weeks before and since I knew that was a sign of maturity in regard to egg laying I kept an eye one her. Her comb suddenly went from pink to dark and I panicked thinking she was sick. The pic is the day it happened. It does redden if I pick her up.

So I have 2 smokey pearls, both purchased from the same store( tractor supply) on the same day. As chicks I noticed one of the pearls had black feet and a darker beak, we named her padfoot, the other pearl is dottie. As they grew padfoot grew dark wattles and combs, but dottie grew red wattles and comb. I wonder if it's just a genetic breed thing?

I just noticed today that padfoots comb and wattles are looking a little more red dusty then the pure black they were. Dottie is laying and padfoot should start laying soon.
