What are you planning for spring???

I am hoping to get my chicks in mid March. 1 large Fav. 1 Bantam Fav. 2 americanas (EE) and 1 Bantam Brahma. I am going to 3 different breeders to get these chicks. Fun! Also, planting a lot of trees from the land conservancy in my county. And I have to have at least a small garden.

Need. More. Coops.

That is my number one priority. After the destruction of my "bachelor pad" by the fam, now used for dogs, I have to pen my boys and their gals separately, and so far, I'm short of coops and/or coop supplies. Got plenty room, some fencing, but boy are supplies nor pre-made coops NOT cheap. Or easy to find where I am. Especially the fact that our truck is in need of repair, we can't even simply get pallets.


Course, beyond that is re-starting the greenhouse with plenty of goods, re-starting the gardens and crops, and hatching out/breeding more birds.

(greenhouse needs restarting because a freakishly cold night killed all but my fig in there)

I have 8 new chicks coming in April!

Thankfully, I have a large coop that is unoccupied right now, so don't have to worry about that. Other than more chickies, I'm working on my chicken yard. My chickens, and one duck, have dang near annihilated the vegetation in their yard, so I had to fence off some of it to let it recuperate. I was going to replant some grass there, but after doing some research, I decided to plant a combo of clover, grasses,chicory, and some other plants. I read that they are more nutritious for the chickens. Oddly enough, it is a mixture that is supposed to attract deer, so I'm hoping to find the seed mixture at one of my local stores. We'll see. I'm just excited to be able to work out in the yard this year. Hip issues have kept me from doing yard stuff for the past couple of years. Got both hips replaced with in the past 8 months. I was actually able to work in the yard yesterday, without having to stop because I hurt! It was so awesome!! Good thing too, because I have ALOT of yard to keep up with. I keep telling myself "one section at a time, one section at a time", lol. Gets overwhelming if you look at the whole entire yard that needs to be dealt with.

My plans for spring include the garden, building a coop for some WLR Cornish, getting some new layers, getting a Silkie hen that I can afford (i.e. less than $20 total), and doing a lot of pulling/driving/training with my Percheron pony. I also need to work on my family to convince them into letting me keep a breeding flock of the Cornish so I don't have to order from hatcheries every year. They've all got bad memories of my past roosters, which were all free ranged and had mean streaks.

That's a project in itself...

My project will be moving from Buffalo, NY to New Brunswick, NJ. To attach some sort of relevance to this thread, I'm mentioning my farewell gifts to the people who have made my three years here memorable in a good way (despite the bad stuff I encountered otherwise) and as "I'm back and I missed you" gifts for my friends back home. I have 38 roses coming as bands (cuttings rooted and grown for a year in a greenhouse, and now ready for planting) in the last week of April. I can't wait!

I'm planning to grow up some meat chicks as a new project this year. I'm also hoping to build or at least redo my coops since they sustained so much damage with all the flooding we had here this year.

I'm also looking forward to starting my garden again! My mom and I already planted garlic in the Fall and we have strawberries who have been trying to poke through. Other than that, I love giong for all the plant seedlings and seeds in the Spring time!
