Now at a little over 1 month old. The New Hampshires and White Wyandottes:


And the Buff Orps and Black Australorps:


Anyone have any guess as to what the oddball is in the 2nd group? It's the mystery chick from McMurray. I think its a roo, and it appears barred, but I have no idea what breed. They are feasting on FF in the pics and are growing like weeds.

Does your barred chicken have a straight comb or a rose (very flat looking at this stage) comb? If its a straight comb then I would say Plymouth Barred Rock and if its a rose comb then I would say Dominique. I got both those breeds from McMurray this year and I am really struggled to tell them apart....I always have to look at the comb. But now that mine are almost 4 months old, I can definitely tell a difference in body size!

I guess tomorrow (it's dark now) when I get home from work I'll have a chick chase and check out the comb. Thanks for the pointers. When I first got them, "he" looked almost identical to the picture of a cuckoo maran... but now looking at the Dominiques, that's pretty similar as well. I don't think it's a Barred Rock as it's supposed to be a "rare" breed. I'll get the answer at some point (I hope). Thanks again!

looks like a Plymouth Barred Rock to me. I have a couple if them.

Why do you think it has to be a rare breed? Mystery chicks can be anything that the hatchery raises.

The hatchery will advertise a "rare" bred and sometimes it is a rare breed, but mostly I think that they will give you what they have an over abundance of in a hatch. Mine was a polish and I was so excited!!!! But it didn't survive....rats!

Good luck on your chick chase!!! Those are always fun At a month old, a Plymouth Barred Rock will have a definite raise single comb, and the Dominique will look like it has no comb at all.

Edited to add: I don't know about the cuckoo maran since I have never raised those. Look up the hatcheries specifications for that breed.

Getting chicks from Greenfire Farms today. These will be the first chicks I am getting through the mail. I ordered 3 black Bresse and 3 bielefelders. One of the bielefelders I ordered as a male. I'm hoping for a extra chick or 2 but will be happy if the ones I ordered survive. I was worried about the heat but they shipped them last night and they are already in the area.

Chicks at one week old. Ordered thru My Pet Chicken and all arrived hungry and thirsty but in good shape. The local post office was great. They called for pick up at 6:30 in the morning and we went right over to get them. We live in a small town in Northern California and the chicks shipped on a Monday and arrived the following Wednesday morning. They were a little noisy at first but settled down quickly once they were in the warm brooder (a large box in the house).
We used a 150 watt heat lamp for the first several days along with an Ecoglow 20. We removed the heat lamp and are using the Ecoglow only now and it is working out great. They hide underneath it to warm up and then come out to eat, drink and play. We kept them on paper towels the first week and changed them daily. They are on wood chips now and love scratching in them. We are still using a chick waterer but added a soda bottle fitted with a nipple type waterer and plan to gradually move them to the nipple waterer completely. They did take to it right away and cant wait to completely get rid of the chick waterer and mess they make with it!
They should be all pullets (we'll see!) and they are Dominques (top row), Easter Eggers (second row), and BC Marans (bottom row).

Just got our shipment of peeps this morning. 2 of 15 were soaking wet and dead. :'( the post office was SO RUDE and cranky, too. They were annoyed that I wanted to open the box there. Poor little peeps. I'm not sure who died but I know they were pricey. Either red orpington or lemon cuckoo orpington or golden cuckoo Marans. The box was all bashed in and the grogel was all over the side of the bix and the lid. Poor little peeps :-( the breeder/shipper on the other hand has been AMAZING and I will order from Papas Poultry a zillion more times as the years go on.

I'll be receiving my first chicks in three weeks. One dozen Buff Orpington pullets.
