WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR? WHAT DID YOU JUST RECEIVE?

700

Yeah! They are here. No extras but all survived and are doing extremely well. They are eating and drinking and running around.

Just got our shipment of peeps this morning. 2 of 15 were soaking wet and dead. :'( the post office was SO RUDE and cranky, too. They were annoyed that I wanted to open the box there. Poor little peeps. I'm not sure who died but I know they were pricey. Either red orpington or lemon cuckoo orpington or golden cuckoo Marans. The box was all bashed in and the grogel was all over the side of the bix and the lid. Poor little peeps :-( the breeder/shipper on the other hand has been AMAZING and I will order from Papas Poultry a zillion more times as the years go on.

How sad, so sorry!

Getting chicks from Greenfire Farms today. These will be the first chicks I am getting through the mail. I ordered 3 black Bresse and 3 bielefelders. One of the bielefelders I ordered as a male. I'm hoping for a extra chick or 2 but will be happy if the ones I ordered survive. I was worried about the heat but they shipped them last night and they are already in the area.

I just went to their Web sight. They have amazing chickens! I have never seen a black chicken before ....TOTALLY black, eyes and everything. WOW. I may order from them next summer. When I have more room for them. Interesting Breeds. I couldn't find yours though. Would love to see pictures when they arrive

Why do you think it has to be a rare breed? Mystery chicks can be anything that the hatchery raises.
Mcmurray states that they will include a mystery chick that is a rare breed. I took them at their word

Doesn't really matter to me what breed it is, I'm just curious is all.

Does your barred chicken have a straight comb or a rose (very flat looking at this stage) comb? If its a straight comb then I would say Plymouth Barred Rock and if its a rose comb then I would say Dominique. I got both those breeds from McMurray this year and I am really struggled to tell them apart....I always have to look at the comb. But now that mine are almost 4 months old, I can definitely tell a difference in body size!
Well, "he" was not in the LEAST bit happy to be in my grasp! He has no comb at all to speak of... just a little "up-turned tick" where the comb will eventually be. So maybe it's a Dom... He doesn't seem to be as large as either of the other breeds he's in with.

Congrats! Hope they arrive safe and sound!

Chicks at one week old. Ordered thru My Pet Chicken and all arrived hungry and thirsty but in good shape. The local post office was great. They called for pick up at 6:30 in the morning and we went right over to get them. We live in a small town in Northern California and the chicks shipped on a Monday and arrived the following Wednesday morning. They were a little noisy at first but settled down quickly once they were in the warm brooder (a large box in the house).
We used a 150 watt heat lamp for the first several days along with an Ecoglow 20. We removed the heat lamp and are using the Ecoglow only now and it is working out great. They hide underneath it to warm up and then come out to eat, drink and play. We kept them on paper towels the first week and changed them daily. They are on wood chips now and love scratching in them. We are still using a chick waterer but added a soda bottle fitted with a nipple type waterer and plan to gradually move them to the nipple waterer completely. They did take to it right away and cant wait to completely get rid of the chick waterer and mess they make with it!
They should be all pullets (we'll see!) and they are Dominques (top row), Easter Eggers (second row), and BC Marans (bottom row).
Nice looking group of chicks there Funset!

I'll be receiving my first chicks in three weeks. One dozen Buff Orpington pullets.
That was the first breed I chose of the 4 I ordered :) I hope they become everything that everyone says they can be

Best of luck with yours!

I ordered 15 hatchery choice brown egg layering pullets, 10 hatchery choice silkies, 5 hatchery choice Cochins! They are going to be shipped July 23 from cackle hatchery!

I would guess Dominique then :) I have about 9 different breeds now and they are definitely at the top of my favorite list!! And hey.....you never know, you may have a female.....how awesome would that be? As far as the comb, mine are 15 weeks old now and the comb is just now getting some "umph" to it ;)

Wow Realtree4... 9 breeds... Do you have them all separated, or mixed together? I (still) intend to keep mine separated for breeding purposes. I'm kinda glad now that the 5th breed I wanted (Delaware) wasn't available with the other 4... I went waaaayyyyyyy overboard on coop design and it's taking forever to get them completed (2 coops with 2 sections each). Had to do it that way to avoid permitting and such. Anyway, why is the Dom your fave? I hope mine is a female

, whatever breed it is, but just looking at it and how it's feathers are developing, I just have a gut feeling it's a roo. Time will tell for sure!

I had very good results with Cackle I think you will be pleased.
I dearly love my LF splash Cochin and I am getting used to hubbies white crested black polish.
One of my Cochin girls likes being picked up and only runs when she thinks the others are getting a treat she isn't, lol.

With everything I've read about the two breeds I ordered It looks as though they are a nice quality I only have one white crested black
polish with a couple of odd white feathers. The Cochin are fully feathered and beautiful I can't wait for them to be grown they are all only
about 7 weeks old.

Congrats and good luck with your new varieties.

Actually I have them all together. I "wanted" to have Easter Eggers as the Roos but you know how it goes...I ordered two Roos, they sent 3. Then one of my Partridge Rock girls is a boy and one of my Speckled Sussex girls is a roo, so I have 5 boys. Which is actually working out because they are awesome boys! And two of the Easter egger boys aren't so awesome...getting processed this weekend ;) I ordered chickens for both their looks, hardiness and laying ability. I'm not so worried about keeping certain breeds. I figured that which ever roo picks whichever pullet and they breed and hatch, then I'm excited to see what I get! But I'm one of those that doesn't care so much about bloodlines and such, I want good chickens and good Roos that lay great eggs! And I think that some of the "barnyard mixes" are so pretty!

I just had my first broody (older hen) hatch out 9 eggs that I got from neighbors so I am running my first coop (older hens), newer coop with newer chickens and now my broody kennel (hen and 9 chicks) and that's enough coops for me!!!

I love the Dominique's because so far their personality has been wonderful!!! Both of mine seem to be very mellow, doesn't raise a fuss and not so high maintainence as some of my other girls are ;) Plus I think they're great looking birds!!!

Oh and so far I have Easter Eggers, Australorp (she's my broody and awesome!), Red sex Link, Black Sex Link, Dominique's, Plymouth Barred Rock, Partridge Rock, Speckled Sussex, Rhode Island Reds, Golden Laced Wyandotte and Silver laced Wyandotte. Okay, I guess I have more than 9 breeds!!!!!! Then the chicks that just hatched are a mix of Easter Eggers, white leghorns X with easter egger and one that I think is a Buff Orpington mix. So yeah, I have a whole pallet of chickens and love it!!!!
