After building our coop, we decided to build a run. We are planning on homemade waterer and feeders. Our friends have a sand box for their chickens.
I was just wondering what are your must haves?
What could you live without?
Or what would you have done better or differently?

I love my poop boards, built-in brooder with attached secure run, covered large dust bathing area included in the covered secured run, fully wired coop with coop cameras!
I like to snap a picture off the coop cam of the flock each night before I go to sleep so I know where everyone roosted the at night if I find anything odd on the boards in the morning during clean up.
Honestly, I would change absolutely nothing about my setup. I love it!

I have a porch light, interior light and plug's. I wouldn't want a coop without electricity.
My only real change is I wish I builded it a foot lower.
Its perfect for me but my wife is only 5' :he
She has to stand on a step stool.
Thank God I put access to the netting boxes on the exterior of the coop :thumbsup

Poop trays. Filled with SweetPDZ if you want total ease of cleaning (Think: Kitty litter box). Poop boards will work to. Either will cut your floor cleaning in half, at least.

A rain collection system. Why let all that clean water go to waste?

Electricity would be nice too, especially if you have hot summers (coop ventilation) or trouble with water freezing in the Winter (water heaters)

The only thing I regret not being able to do is a solid run roof for shade in summer and snow protection in winter. But I avoided a lot of mistakes by reading and planning for months before building.
