I am so new to raising chicks....we have 34. I lost my first 19 to my dog getting them. Those first ones were very friendly but they didnt run to me when I entered their pen to play with them, they ran away but after a few mins they were fine and let me hold them and ran up to me. My neighbor was over this weekend and saw me get in with them and said something was wrong that they should be friendly and run up to me. This batch is friendly and happy and after a few mins will all run up to me. Am I doing something wrong? I tried it different yesterday and today. I put my hand in there with food and talked to them and a few ran to my hand at ate the others could care less. I talked and slowly got in their pen area...again all ran. I would too if I saw this huge monster coming into my house!

They have a very big I call it pen, it's a fenced area we made in our garage, 34 chicks, one adult and 3 kids can all fit inside and have room to move.

that is normal behavior if u vist/play with them they willl come right up to u wen they see you my friends did nd mine didnt mine do now tho

Hi, I have found that it has to a lot to do with the breed, some are more friendlier than others. I started with 6 week old leghorn/cochin/Ameracuna mix. The leghorns, forget it, not friendly run away all the time, they are now 2 years old, the few that clearly have the Cochin and Ameracuna are much friendlier. I then got some Red Sexlinks, totally friendly, sat for me to pick them up, I think they would have slept in the bed if I had let them. haha, Got some Partridge/Cochin mix from a poultry swap at 7 wks old, and they are not very trusting but do come up to me.
