Hi!! My niece has a guinea pig that she does not have time for anymore so I am going to adopt him!! I’m wondering what the best bedding is? I was thinking horse pellets but I’m not sure? What do you use?

Pellets may be fine... I wonder if there is a cost difference between "horse" pellets and fireplace pellets? I have used them with chicks and was my preference for my mini pig litter box, but have not tried it with my G-pigs.

I also prefer pine shavings. Lot's of great info if you have time (and patience) to view this video. Not super entertaining, but very informative and with experience...

I also enjoyed this one, if your little guy is shy...

I adopted 3 guinea pig boars almost a month ago. The more I learn about them, the more fascinating they are! Consider getting him a male buddy if you are able. :wee

Their names from left to right are Honcho, Poncho, and Sancho. :D

I'm sure you get those names.. being from Texas, lol! :p

I'm sure they've lost weight since coming here, but feel as it's a good thing. I think they were getting excess treats at their previous home and maybe not enough exercise. I've doubled their kennel space and they love fresh grass and have pellets left in the feed dish daily.. so definitely not making them go hungry. They did have like quadruple chins, but just normal now.

Pic of you guy, always welcome! ;):pop

FYI I have switched to it fleece layer for bedding. Just a single layer of polar fleece. You can pick it up and shake it outside daily, much less messy than shavings. Then pop it in your wash to clean. You can pick up cheap fleece at Walmart, or in the future you can pick up used blankets at Goodwill or salvation army and cut them down to size.

I agree with Justso about using a fleece blanket. If you want to do bedding I would recommend not using pine. We have a ginne pig at my school named Twix, she was on wood bedding for 2 days and got mites in her ears. Also with 2 of my chickens were not aloud in the Central FL Fair because the bedding they were on had mites in it and they got in the birds. On of my girls Lace still got in because she was in a cat carrier on a towel. Maybe I should stop holding a grudge on pine bedding, I still use it in my coops. And most importantly my information comes from read, doing and fixing my mistakes, and my amazing FFA advisor.
