I am expecting my second batch of chicks on the 29th. The last batch is 9 weeks old now and Oh do we enjoy them.

I guess that explains why there is 8 more coming!

My concern is bedding. We didnt know any better the first time around and used pine shavings. We had no problems, no pasty butt, no sickness, nothing! Then the more I read it seems shavings are bad for babies? Is this the case? Do they eat it? Should I stick with what worked the first time? If not what should I use? I would appreaciate your opinions! Thanks in advance!

This is my first time raising chicks, but shredded newspaper seemes to work well. They dont slip on it or eat it. When I went to Tractor Supply to get the chicks though, they used pine shavings.

Using newspaper can cause health problems in the leg area. Don't do it.
Use paper towels for the first few days then switch to shavings. Not cedar though, that can kill them...use pine.
