Curious as to what everyone uses. I'm looking for the best cheapest thing I can use. I read the pine needles thread which is great but we don't have enough

I put in my open front coop 2" of the grass I cut from the lawn, once a week. Every 2 months i get out of there some composted grass with manure which I put to rest min 6 months before using it. Never need to buy fertiliser for the garden anymore. I do not know if it would work in a closed coop but I think so, it's easy, free and apreciated by the chicken.

I use pine shavings in mine. I use a dustpan and child's rake to scoop the droppings in the morning when I let the girls out, and it stays pretty clean.

I use pine shavings in my coop. It costs $11 for a bale at my feed store and I keep it 6" deep. I turn it every couple of weeks and clean it out completely twice a year. I have sand in my run and I also throw in grass clippings which the chickens treat like a buffett. I change out the grass clippings every couple of weeks and compost it. I'll put more sand down in the spring and occassionally in the fall if it's needed.

I use pine shavings as well. I can get it for $5 a bale at Fleet Farm- it's supposed to cover 300 square feet. I put it in 3 inches deep, then once a week a put another layer on top. But the nest boxes have hay in them since the shavings get stamped down pretty good when the chickens are in there.
