What breed AND gender is this?

Here's a bit clearer pic of them

Not sure why the pics are rotated.

The eyes seem the same size as my standard lavenders when they were about 3 months old. Time will tell I imagine

first of all compared to the waters they are very small also if they are 3 months old they are close to full size and the eyes appear to be larger could i see one compared to your hand
I can't take a picture, since I'm not the one with the chickens, but I see the original poster did.

To me, they still look like young examples of standard-size chickens.

Weighing them might sort it out, but otherwise I think the only way to tell is to wait and see.

Revising this thread as I'm paranoid about having a cockerel or 2 in my mix.

Note the odd black tail feather tips. Is that cocerel specific? Are there any saddle feathers coming in?

Nice to see how they are doing! So far, they still look like "probably pullets" to me. I would expect a male to be pretty obvious by this age, but I can't be positive because some males do develop slowly and because you do not know their age for sure.

The black in the tail feathers could happen on males or females.

Are there any saddle feathers coming in?
I do not see any saddle feathers at this time. That means they could be pullets, or they could be cockerels that are too young to have saddle feathers yet.

Thank you so much!

I was very shocked to find 2 of my 3 LavOrps were males. So I think I'm being extra paranoid with these buffs.

It is easy to be paranoid, especially after an experience like that!

And sometimes a late-maturing male (or more than one) will look like a pullet for quite a while, then one day he makes himself known. Obvious males are easy, but it sometimes takes me a long time to be really confident that a chick is female, because there is always that small chance...

If any of these end up male in the long run, I'm going to stick to sex link breeds only.

Ive been trying to put a flock together since July and something always ends up happening. At this rate, I'm not getting any eggs till spring 2026 lol
