It's definitely a rooster, but I have no idea on the breed! Looks to me to be some sort of mix, but that is really just a guess. Hopefully someone else chimes in soon.

How can you tell? I'm 15 and I got 12 chickens for my birthday. I love them all very much and they all have names but they're supposed to be hens, thats what we ordered anyway. I have read in many places that lead hens can sometimes act like roosters when there isn't one in the flock, is that right? How come I have roosters if we ordered hens?

Hatcheries only have 90% sexing quarntee. So sometimes you end up with roosters. It happens. And yes lead hens can act like roosters, but yours is definatley not a hen. He is 100% roo.

What breeds did you order from the hatchery? He's going to be one of those breeds unless they sent some other chicks along as packing peanuts.

If he's one of the breeds you ordered, then it was simply the luck of the draw that you got male. Sexing is not an exact process, which is why hatcheries don't guarantee 100% sexing success. Every year, some people get a male when they ordered sexed pullets. It's just the way it is with sexing and the luck of the draw who gets the male that the sexer thought was a female. If he was a packing peanut, then there was no mistake. Packing peanuts are almost always male.

Looks like what hatcheries call a Rhode Island Red, to me.

Dang :( my uncle ordered them for me so I'm not sure of what we have. Is it possible that some hens can have droopy tail feathers like roosters?

Most Hatcheries consider any darker red chickens that have similarities to RIRs a RIR
