We ordered 10 Golden Laced Wyandottes and 5 Rhode Island Reds from Murray McMurray and they sent along our mystery bird below. We think it is possibly a Silver Laced Cochin Rooster, but aren't sure. It is a very friendly bird. Please let me know what you think. Thank you. VH Chicken Farm

Mystery chicks sent along with an order usually are males. He looks like a Dark Brahma. He has a pea comb of a Brahma rather than the single comb of a Cochin. I have a Buff Brahma hen who is very sweet. I have heard good things about the temperament of Brahma roosters. They tend to be gentle giants.

Thanks Scratch'n' Peck. Definitely a Dark Brahma now that we look it up after your note. Hard to tell the sex. Do you think this is a Rooster?

Brahmas can be slow to mature compared to other breeds. I don't necessarily see any signs of this chicken being a rooster yet. the first things you might see if it is a rooster are long pointy saddle feathers, pointy hackle feathers and longer sickle feathers from the tail. The comb on a brahma rooster may not redden up any faster than the Wyandotte hens, it is hard to say. It is just that extra chickens given by the hatchery are more likely to be male unless you specifically say you don't want any roosters. By the way, I love my roosters. And when I get another rooster some day, I think I would like a Brahma.
