We ordered Barred Rocks, Cream Legbar and Welsummer from our local feed store. They placed the order and we received them the week of April 21. We realized 3 weeks in that the Barred Rocks we ordered are not what we received. (See photo below.). We believe these are either New Jersey Giants or Australorps. We are not familiar with either breed as we never had them in our previous flock. Would love to know what we have growing in Coop II.

IM only writing because I'm not liking that giant breast. I've only seen that on broiler breeds. I'm not all that experienced with chickens. Well no. I have a ton of chickens in the last 7 years, but in all honesty i still suck at gender/breed ID. Sorry. I week say i have had 12 JGs and they did not ever have that giant breast.

I tried to pick one up but they just ran away. In the midst of the chaos I did see the bottom of their feet and they look yellow. They have black/slate legs so it seems they could be Jersey Giants. Coming from a hatchery we know they will not be breed to standards which may
explain the large breast on the one chick. I checked others and they are not all that way. We called Hoover and they confirmed they did ship NJG to the feed store with our order. Though the box had a Barred Rock label I think the store just used it to separate their order from ours. They typically order Barred Rocks weekly. The Welsummer and CLB are not what they order but was our special request. Either they just made mistake or they accidentally sold our order of PBR to someone else and just gave us the NJG in place of them knowing we could not do anything once we realized it. UGH! I am just going to look around for PBR hatching eggs so I know what we have. Our plan was to breed Welsummer Roos to female PBR to get Welbar.

I think they’re Jersey Giants then. And sorry you didn’t get your Barred Rocks. :hugs

I have an entire series of posts about TSC getting the chicks either mislabeled from the hatchery or guessing themselves. It's really hard to be sure with many chicks until it's too late, i know. But you'd think the hatchery ... I'm usually ok with it as i have a ton of space and already have 40 plus. But not everyone is so fortunate. Some folks buy LHs for egg quantity and don't get it. Or for show, 4H etc, and don't get it, so i think more care should be exercised, tbh. I recently traded some of my LHs to an elderly couple who ended up with some EEs (which don't lay well up here). They also eat my roos, as i don't keep them. I only ever get hateful vicious hen and human killer ones for some reason. In any case, i lament the broiler breeds as they die early if you are not a chicken eater (like us) or just hobby raise them. I know they have a purpose, i don't have to like it. I've gotten a few accidentally, usually as rescues though. We give 95% of the eggs away since we don't eat eggs either. I understand any aggravation! Are there some local farms or BYC wanters who will reimburse your expenses if you wish to replace them?
Oh i was also going to say, every one of my JGs i bought from TSC was the same size as a regular Americauna or any other breed. Same for the brahmas I've purchased over the years from there. So much for the "giant" part. I usually just rehome my less favored breeds so i can get new ones! I know a young lady doing an all organic farm and uses chickens as pest control in a 100 acre field, so they get their best life, and i get to redo my chicken math!

We have the space for the NJG, just not what we wanted. Kind of frustrating that the feed store is not taking responsibility The same happened for the ISA Browns that Rural King had in their Buff Orpington brooder. At least they gave us 10 Buff Orpington once we mentioned it to the department manager. We are up to 72 chick pullets (20 which were accidental.) We do eat eggs and will be selling them. We have had, PBR, BO, Wellies, CLB previously so we have them now What is new to us is Speckled Sussex which we wanted and Silverudd Blues that we hatched and . three Araucana…Which was an impulse purchase. LOL We will raise the others and take good care of them but will not breed them.

Oooh I've never heard of the silverudd blues, going to check those out. Love learning new breeds. Here, I debated this year between araucana and Prairie bluebells. I went with the PBs since a pal had some araucana already. These PBs are ok, a bit more flighty than the mentally sturdier breeds i favor. No idea until August about the touted bright blue egg color. I also considered the specks, but they were out of stock at the hatchery so i decided to give Easter eggers another try. Historically they don't lay well here. I changed food, no soy, no sorghum, though i am not optimistic. I am beginning to think they just arent a good laying hybrid. I will find out if it was the feed, constantly cooler Temps and shorter days or what... i guess.

Silverudd Blue are new to us. They actually lay a light green to light olive geeen egg. Sometimes they have brown specs. The ones we received were pretty. The chickens are blue or white with blue splash. We hatched both. We only have three Araucana and only one has the facial feathers and he acts like the queen of all of her coop.
