Hi All, my husband found a wayward chicken in the ally behind our home. She had evidently escaped an attack by something. Lost all the feathers on her bottom and has a gash that is healing nicely. Poor girl, all freaked out though. Anyhow he caught her and we have added her to our flock until her people can be found ( not looking likely). We are wondering what she is. Looks kinda funny with no rump feathers but there is new growth. Please check out the pic and tell us what she is. Her name is Lucky, not real original but fitting given her circumstances.

Thanks y'all :) any ideas on how to make her part of our flock without her getting picked on by our older birds? We have some nasty weather coming in tomorrow and want to put her in the coop but 2 of our hens have decided they don't like her :( free ranging in the yard they do ok, she just keeps her distance.
She is a very nice chicken and has been thru quite enough.

I wouldn't try to integrate her right now.

She has been stressed and has healing gashes and pin feathers which the other birds will peck at. Birds don't like any bird that is sick or injured times that by the fact she is new. They will pick on her. Plus her injuries can make her more susceptible to disease, including those that your flock has built an immunity to but she hasn't. That can make her a vector of disease to your flock.

Ideally, you should have isolated her away from your flock from the first and not integrated her in...she could be carrying a disease and infect your flock with something. (I know...I've infected my flock by bringing in a mature bird.)

You should keep her in isolation for at least 2 weeks or until you are certain she is disease free and until her injuries are fully healed.

A room with a view in a nice quiet corner away from your flock is all she needs right now.

Then, if she looks well, start in her in a run with a fence partition where they can see but not peck. After the birds get used to her, then at night put her in the coop on a roost next to your calmest birds. The next day she will get hassled a little as they figure out a pecking order around the grain bin, but most integrate fairly easy this way.

My thoughts.
