What breed dog to get/avoid?

My lab and beagle are awesome dogs and love the kids and don't mess with the chickens. My golden retriever will kill a chicken IF left inattended with them....He also loves the kids and none of them bother the cats. Jack Russels are also very good dogs

My FIL has Pugs and they are adorable! Not all of them are suitable for kids if they have not been raised around them. They do have respiratory problems (snorting LOL) and hip and hock problems as all of his dogs did have it even they were from so called champion bloodlines.

Oh yeah I love Corgi's, they are great working dogs but sometimes they can be hyper or very laid back. They are good with kids as well!

So far I

my Cavalier King Charles Spaniel puppy. He is bright (except for jumping off furniture) loves the whole family and anyone who enters the house, gets along with my cats and other two dogs. Seems to be easily trainable. We have crated him for the last two days and NO accidents. He sleeps on my daughters bed at night and hasn't had a night accident since we got him 2 weeks ago. He is about 16 weeks old. He would make a terrible guard dog though since he is so lovey dovey. He does bark on the rare occasion. When he plays he plays hard, but when he is done he is lumpy. we taught him how to play fetch in one try.

They get to be 15-20 lbs.

I would not reccomend Bichons. Have one - love her but they are one of the worst breeds to housebreak. They are also very loving but very hyper (all the ones I have met are)

If you look into this breed there are Cavaliers and there are just plain king charles spaniels. The Cavaliers are cuter and have better temperments.

I myself have small children and there are several breeds I would never consider-simply because I don't want to take the chance on a breed that is known for aggressive tendencies-which some breeds are. Why do police forces PREFER German Shepherds over a Golden Retriever?

They prefer GSDs because they are smart...smart enough to discern when a stranger is trouble and needs to be watched yet willing to tell his human this and abide by that human's judgment. They are fearless and will not back down in a fight yet so courageous that they will give up their own life to protect their people. They are incredibly gentle with little ones yet able to totally change gears when the older kids want a romp. They and Dobies are the 2 most trainable breeds I have ever known.

Don't get me wrong. I think Goldens are beautiful, wonderful dogs. I just don't expect them to lay down their life for me. But I KNOW my GSDs will in a heartbeat without a flicker of hesitation.

I have to say I have never, ever seen a mean pug. They all seem to slover all over you & as someone pointed out they're so ugly, they're cute! Actually I find them quite cute and lovable.

I am partial to Dobermans and have had them in my life for 25 plus years...if properly bred and raised, they are great dogs, smart, good with kids, easy keepers...my red fm is my catch dog if anyone gets loose...it was hilarious the day Barney the gander got loose and I could not catch him...I sent my girl and she got him by the base of his neck and held him until I could get there...she had her eyes shut and her head tilted to the sky as he flailed her and tried to "goose" her...you could just read the expression on her face as in, "hurry up for Godssake, he is killing me."
My next fav is German Shorthaired Pointers from breeders who actually work and hunt their dogs...

I have had many types of dogs; Spaniel,Dachsund mix, Standard Poodles, Siberian Husky, German Shepard, &
Chihuahuas(I have 3 now).
I have to say the Standard Poodles were the smartest.
The Husky, the most gentle(my boys used to try to ride on her back)she never nipped, always running away though.
German Shepard,smart, but sheds quite a bit, big vet/food bills too.
Dachsund mix was best all-around dog.
Chihuahuas, most fun, since they are so small I can have 3.

I wonder if a Miniature Poodle would suit your needs. It's a medium size intelligent dog that doesn't shed much.

AWEE this thread makes me sad! I have not read any other post however. BUt I will list the dogs to avoid.


-Avoid all dogs that have been chained for endless times.
-Pits and other"macho" breed mixes
-any dog that has not been altered at an acceptable age
-any dog with un-xrayedhips and or elbows
-any dog not housed trained.
-any dog that is large and is black

Anybody else have a few to add?.... If you are not looking for a purebred, try to bel ess biased in the breeds you pick. ANd look more to personality and need than breed.
