What breed/gender are we?

Looks dark, if it is, it's a good sign it's a pullet. The males are usually pretty light. There's some really good info on this site for looking at different pictures of this breed. Good luck!
 
A Barred Rock pullet normally will have a defined and crisp white head spot, while Barred Rock cockerels will also have a white head spot that has blurry edges/is more irregular. This can be hard to determine, especially if you only have one chick (not other chicks to compare to).

Darker chicks are usually pullets. Males look more "grey" or have more white fluff.

To me, that looks like a definite 100% female. Wing feathers are in and they aren't mostly white.
 
First 2 -- some sort of Production Red. Red Sex-Link, Red Star, Golden Comet (they have various names). 3rd - White Leghorn? or white Rock?
