What breed hens are particularly broody?

My Brahmas haven't ever gone broody. This year it's been my Australorpe, Orpingtons, and RIR.

My Aussie has just finished hatching our first clutch of chicks. Very good mama hens.

What type of Brahmas do you have? How old are they? Where did you get them?

Both of my Welsummers went broody this year; I'm not sure if that's common for them or not though.

That is a handy list.

It states that Welsummers are non-setters and Brahmas are setters.

But there are individual variations.

I saw that! I had two Welsummers and two Russian Orloffs brood this year; so I guess any chicken can technically be broody, eh?
(and Thank YOU! great list, I sent that to our 4H kids!)

People have posted on here about their White Leghorns going broody. So, yes, probably any breed of hen can go broody. But it is very rare for a Leghorn to go broody.

What types of hens and rooster do you have?

Yes, they will be mixed. Some crosses work better than others, though.

The rooster is a Dominique. At least that's my best guess. He's a stray from my neighbor's that didn't want to be an only child, so he moved in with my girls. My older hens are golden sex links. Those are the only ones he's "spending time" with now. Although I have some RIR and 1 cochin that aren't fully mature yet. There is also a cochin rooster that watches over the RIR and cochin hen, but he hasn't realized there's more to life than eating.

Ha Ha! Funny!

Gold Sex Links are produced with a Rhode Island Red Rooster and a Rhode Island White Hen. So Sex Links are already crossed. If the Sex Links have offspring, they will have wide variation, and most of them won't lay as well as the Sex Links. So I am not sure what the offspring would look like from a Dominique rooster and Gold Sex Link hens. It might be fun to find out. But the Sex Links won't sit on eggs. Maybe the Cochin hen will sit on eggs when she is older.

Do you want to breed them, or were you just curious?

If it were me, I would get a Rhode Island Red rooster to breed with the Gold Sex Links and the Rhode Island Red Hens. I am not sure what you would get with a RIR rooster and a Cochin hen, though.
