What breed is Bonnie?

Hi guys,

This is my first post and one of the reasons I wanted to join BYC.

Here is a picture of my 2 year old hen Bonnie. I got her last Christmas from a lady who had incubated some eggs from a bird auction. Bonnie was the only one to hatch and after having her for a year she decided it would be better for her to go to a home with more chickens, rather than living with aviary birds.

She is a lovely chicken and lays very large brown eggs - they average 78g and the largest has been 86g! They are fabulous to eat! She lays them daily and doesn't have any trouble. Sometimes the eggs have a bit of speckle to them and then other times they don't!

So any ideas of what she is?

Many of the birds you have in the UK are somewhat different to what the US, Can, or Aus have. That said, she looks to be a cross. Some golden/buff coloration, likely from a Warren type commercial layer, but even that is a guess. Yes, chickens are quintessentially social, flock birds.

Many thanks for the quick reply. As she is my first 'large fowl' (as I usually just have bantams!) I wasn't quite sure where to look. After seeing your reply I Googled 'Warren' and the images I have found do look very similar to her! So thats good. The reason I ask is because I am interested in getting more similar or the same as Bonnie as she is such a fantastic layer. I am so pleased to have her as a part of my expanding flock. In addition, she gets on really well with my smaller chickens with her best friend being my porcelain barbu d'uccle!
