What breed is my grey hen?

Andalusian blue has a darker head, hackle & (for males) saddle. Self-blue and lavender are the same--at least in the US. The name of the gene is lavender, designated lav. It is a recessive gene, meaning that each parent must contribute a copy for the offspring to display the characteristics. Yes, it is a solid, light blue colour. If both parents are lavender, then all offspring will be lavender.

However, from your clarification of what you get (blacks and white with black specks as well as the blues), you have andalusian blue, not lavender. The blacks are black, the greys are blue and the whites with black specks are splash.

Very seldom do I get chicks with darker feathers.... but occassionally over the last 14 + years.....
Here is a photo of a representative hatch, from last week:

Last night I ordered Blue Andalusian chicks, so the next two years will tons of fun.... comparing my 'old' chickens and the Blue Andalusians!!!

I have fourth generation hens of my grandma's grey chickens.

Yes, they may have been mixed with other breeds since she gave me her orginal hens.... and maybe her hens were not entirely pure.

However, I consistently hatch these grey hens... with very solid and definite traits, so some of the original breed must be coming through strongly.

Here are a few distinguishing traits:

**steel, blue grey, very little if any lighter grey feathers.

**grey legs and top of toes, with white/light grey feet

**very upright, fanshaped tail

**small, short, pointed comb, extending back over head

**grey/blackish beak

**good mothers, although not particularily broody

**excellent layers, long production

**hardy in our cold climate

I get very few roosters... am hoping one little grey chick keeps on looking like a rooster!

Anyone have an idea on what this breed was originally????
OMG!!! I just got one of these beauties today and was also wondering what breed she is? The guy I bought her from didn't know either. You have no idea how excited I was when I saw your picture!!! I plan on getting another one this weekend. What do you recommend I breed them with?
