Hi there, I've only started adding poultry to my backyard within the past year, and it's only a small operation, mostly rescuing battery hens. I only own 7 hens and 1 rooster at this present time until i can afford a bigger coop.

However, recently I purchased 2 ducklings for my girlfriend, as part of her birthday present, because she always went on about them. They are real characters to watch. I got them when they were 1 week old, and a lot of care has went into them. They are now 8 weeks old and fully got their colours i reckon. I'm no duck expert, but I'm almost certain they are both ducks, I hope. Plus, I'm pretty certain one of them is a Blue Swedish.

However, could someone please tell me what breed "Daisy", in the photo, is? I have searched repeatly and have come up with nothing. She may even be a hybrid. A few characteristics I can supply about her is, she is a follower, she follows "Puddles", the Blue Swede everywhere.. She's a lot quieter than Puddles aswell. She hasn't even began quacking yet, it's more of a chirp/squeak, where as Puddles quacks flat to the mat. She has a blue trim near the tip of both of her wings, and I would say she's got dabbling traits aswell as diving traits. She's a lot more active in water than Puddles is. I would really appreciate any help given to determine her breed. Thank you.

Could it be a Welsh Harlequin mix?

Ah, yes. I cannot believe I missed that, just after looking them up and seeing the blue trim.. Thank you.

I agree with what Kevin says - a mixed breed and that a Welsh Harlequin may well have been involved - and/or a Snowy mallard. She looks like she has Harlequin Phase genes in there (which Welsh Harlequins have and also ducks with the Snowy pattern). She has faint eye stripes which means she is not pure for the Dusky gene (which Welsh Harlequins should be and which takes away their eye stripes). She is not a 'pure breed' in that she is not close enough in colouring to any one breed to be called that breed, but she sure is really pretty.

The other one has the colouring of a Blue Swedish, but just with a very creative bib :) I love blue ducks...

They're both lovely and it's great that your girlfriend is enjoying them so much!

Thanks cocoa. I agree she isn't a pure breed, but she obviously has some harlequin blood:) nevertheless, yeah, I think she's beautiful. The swede may not even be pure breed, but I wasn't interested in that at all.. I just hope they lay while the girlfriend admires them:p
