I went to an Auction, sure looked like 2 Hens when they lifted them up, and I swore he said hens.
I can't have a Roo here but they both have the same coloring so wondering what breed he is?
Probably a mix?

Do you happen to know the age?
No, I am guessing it is Young, maybe like 6months. The Spurs are just starting to poke out from the leg.
The Hackle feathers are freyed at the ends so if it wasn't for the FAT legs and Spur buds I might not know.
I just put them in for the night so I can get a better pic tomorrow.

I am thinking barred rock ri red cross? I just saw someones pic on here and it kind of looks like him,

Or maybe a Bielefelder mix ?

I can't see the hackle feathers in the pictures you posted.

Hens have spur buds too, and some hens do grow relatively large spurs over time. Hens of some breeds do have large legs too.

Have you heard it crow or gotten an egg from it? I might give it a few more days to be sure. It would be really frustrating to actually have a hen and go to great efforts to get rid of her!

I think Bielefelder mix is a good guess. I might guess the other parent is something like a Rhode Island Red or a Red Star sexlink or one of the other kinds that have a lot of red with a black or white tail.

There are many other combinations of breeds could also end up with that appearance, so those are definitely just guesses.

That picture is mislabeled somehow. A first-generation cross of Barred Rock and Rhode Island Red should be mostly black, with or without white barring depending on which parent was from which breed. There might be some gold or red in parts of it, but not the large areas of red/gold color that is seen in the photo. And the white leg color must come from another breed.

I agree your bird has a coloring similar to that picture, I just have a problem with how the picture is labeled.

I only know that pic from what they said when I googled pics.

I saw him mount the hen, or try to since he is young. Pretty sure it's a Roo. He's pretty but sadly I can't have roos here.
Even a close up of the Hackle feathers you can't tell. It's like they are frayed at the tip. I've not ever seen that other then maybe on the Bielefelder- but that was just pics as I've not seen one in person

Yeah, I figured that. When I said it was mislabeled, I meant the place you found it had a wrong label on it.

I agree, that sounds more like male behavior than female! Although I have seen some adult hens do that too.

Can you maybe get a photo of the saddle feathers? Those are the ones that grow on the back, just in front of the tail, and on adult roosters they hang down on each side.

I agree, it can be hard to tell sometimes.

Given the size of the comb & wattles, I figure it must be either a fully adult hen (and would probably lay an egg within a day or two), or a partially-grown male (which might show pointy feathers on the saddle & hackle areas, although as you point you they may not be very obvious.)

But if the two chickens look the same, then you might have two of one sex, whichever sex that may be. So I'd be looking rather carefully at both of them, looking for eggs, and listening for crowing.

I'm not doubting he is a Roo, he's young. It was just that the hackle feathers were so weird to me.
I can't have Roos here, I have had Hens for a while. Up until a few years ago I sold them as I thought I was moving, then didn't :(

I've just not seen coloring like this so was wondering if anyone had.

The Hen has a Vent, she is also young. Honestly I didn't look for a vent on the Roo since I'm sure he is a roo.

If you had looked, you would have a found a vent either way, because roosters and hens both have vents. It looks a little different on a hen that lays eggs (stretched out by the egg passing through each day), but the vent on a rooster looks just the same as the vent on a hen that is not laying because she is molting or broody.

In that case, I'm guessing Bielefelder-mix as the most likely thing.
