What breed is this young gentleman?

This is Queso. 3/25 hatch date, so right at 9 weeks old. He was part of our “all female rainbow layer assortment” from Meyer. This assortment is somewhat of a grab bag of chicken breeds (rainbow layer meaning variety of breeds, not variety of egg colors), which we were happy with, but they do not tell you what you’re getting.

We originally thought Queso was a Barnevelder based on the chipmunk coloring as a chick, but over the last 4 weeks, he’s made a lot of changes, including being somewhat of a surprise cockerel - also have a Mottled Ancona from the same order that surprised us too. Didn’t necessarily want any gentlemen, but we’re not mad about it by any means.

Some people have said Queso is a Penciled Rock, which I could see based on the pattern. Others have said Easter Egger, which would explain the chipmunk chick coloring, but there were no typical and distinct puffy chick cheeks on this one from what I can remember.

Any thoughts? He’s not going anywhere, but we’re curious.

I’m thinking Queso is a Silver Laced Barnevelder, but it’s hard to tell. I’d love to see updates as he grows
