Black skin is definitely a mystery. I wish I could show the Mohawk thing I'm talking about. Maybe tomorrow they will be dry and I can get a picture. Someone told me black star but I had never heard of that breed before.

The black skin isn't really black skin. The legs clearly show yellow under the dark wash. It's a case of gypsy face. It's caused by excess melanizers associated with the extended black of the Barred Rock mothers.

And yes, the article says they're rare. It's because that's the place that "made" them, and they want folks to think they're getting something rare and exotic and hard to find. Saying "we threw a bunch of heavy black breeds together and hatched them out for a few generations and here's what we've got" wouldn't encourage folks to buy them, would it

Just like there's a dozen different names for red sex link, each hatchery tries to market their own type.

Most do grow out of it as they mature. Some do stay dark, though. It's purely cosmetic, though. Won't have any effects on her health or abilities to lay.
