Hello. This, this is Nugget.
About a month ago I happened upon an Orschlen's and realized they had ducklings for sale. In a big tub, they had a bunch of older guys...and Nugget really stood out. He was the biggest, baldest, and definitely the ugliest. He had been ripping feathers out due to stress...it goes without saying, he won me over instantly. I was positive he'd even out and look like my others.

Now, that didn't happen. I'm new at ducks, but I know this is no Pekin.

He's had me scratching my head for two weeks now, as my others have been filling in. They're now twice his size and very friendly, while he's very withdrawn and timid. He also seems to have a thinner neck, and his eyes have taken on a brown color. I've done research every day, trying to find a breed that matches, and I've sort of settled on Silver Appleyard. But what I don't get is that these are critically endangered ducks...I bought Nugget for $2.

Is there some Appleyard lookalike breed I haven't found yet? This just doesn't seem right.

Thank you!

I like the odds of him being a Welsh Harlequin much more. The beak color throws me off, though...

I'd say a cross. Welsh cross or maybe an appleyard cross (but appleyards are not common in the US)

I suppose he could be a poorly marked WH but with SO much white I'd suspect he's crossed with Pekin. He is nice looking. I'd keep an eye to make sure he isn't being beaten up on by larger males though.

Some stores will get ducklings from local breeders and you could end up with anything. I'd SERIOUSLY doubt that this bird came from a large hatchery (they have way too much to lose by shipping crosses).
