What Breed do you guy think are best to keep as pets for kids? Do their temperments vary from breed to breed? Or is it more how much they're handled? Also what breed of duck would be best for a beginner to show at a fair for their first time? At the moment we have 2 Crested Magpies (13 days old), 2 Khaki Campbells (13 days old), 2 Pekins (9 days old) and 2 Rouens (approx 3 wks old).

I feel it is a combination of the person's management and the personality of the individual duck. Marwen has two Rouen drakes who are amazing. DenverDucky has a Pekin duck who is . . . amazing. Then there are my Runners who, yes, are amazing. I have had toddlers join me with the flock, and it always goes very well. I have spent untold numbers of hours with the ducks growing up, socializing them.

My Khaki were hand fed and handled since they were chicks and still have not warmed up to me. The only one that did was killed last week by my drake. I would say khaki are not as outgoing as some would believe. I am going to get a few blue Swedish to see how they are.

Thank you both, right now I have 8 ducklings, 2 Pekins, 2 Crested Magpies, 2 Khaki Campbells, and 2 Rouens. I've had the Khakis and Magpies 12 days old, they were all 1 day old. The Magpies are beyond friendly, and love to sit on my lap and don't mind being away from the flock with me. The Khakis are friendly once you grab them they lay on your lap but aren't as friendly as the Magpies. Then I got my pekins the day they hatched an have had them 9 days but they still are quite squirrly to hold and handle. Last I rescued 2 2 week old Rouens who are very nervous when handled and I've had them a week. I handle my flock atleast once dailey :) .

I'm partial to call ducks and cayugas! Cayugas are very sweet-natured, and call ducks have been bred to be friendly, although they're noisy and can be a bit hard-headed. :p

I do think Amiga has a good point, how they are raised and individual personality of the ducks play a roll. Frankly, i find calls the nicest for kids, they are super compact.. tolerate being held and can be easily tamed.

The only downs? they are loud(females) and are pred prone so one has to be careful of this, they also fly and very, very well so this has to be taken into consideration. My calls are my pets... while drakes can be a bit more aggressive, it's nothing you cannot keep a handle on, all my calls with the exception of my new 5 just hatched from my one mama duck.. have been hand raised by me and very used to being handled.

I think kids benefit massively from being involved in animals that said i always consider adults to be the primary caregiver and should always shadow kids to ensure treatment and care of the animals is being done right.

Thank you going quackers and Amykins I'll definitely look in to call ducks. My kids are 4 and 8 and of course aren't allowed unsupervised in with the birds, but when me or my husband are out there, so are our little ones. They help feed and water everyday, I think that as long as they're supervised that kids are fine to help with them long before 12. at our local ag expo kids younger then mine are showing everything.
