What breed of quail is this ? and Is it a male or female ?

I'd like an answer too! I have one just like that in with my Coturnix quail. Mine is a boy, I know for sure because he crows a lot and acts like a male. I also have 2 others that are that color brown but have white chests, like a tuxedo. I don't know what those are either. Maybe hybrids?

thanks for reply. mine makes some crow like sound too. but I have never seen him going after the females. (maybe he is too young). I looked at the vent and it was exactly the same as my female quails. I guess I should wait a few more weeks.

To tell if it is Male or female the male will have "foam" aka sperm around his vent. This only happens when they are in breeding mode i think. I only have a few quail but I'm guessing it is a coturnix chocolate quail (nickname for the breed). Their is a fancier name for it but I can't remember the official name. Here's an example of the "foam" on their vent (picture not mine). Hope this helps!

Okay, just did research. I believe our mystery color is called rosetta. And I think it comes in normal and double barred. Your's looks like a double barred rosetta. And apparently if you breed a Rosetta to a white one (like the TX A&M) you will get a tuxedo like I am talking about. That's basically how I understood it anyway. I also have a girl that is what I think is called Cinnamon colored, but I could be wrong. She is a very light tan color with black dots. I think it'd be fun to breed her to the TX, Rosetta, and Tuxedo and hatch the eggs and see what I get!

YES youre right ! there is a thread in this very site about mixed coturnix. the one which looks like mine is called rosetta.

looks more like a Tibetian to me, rosettas have more of a red/gold"flake" in their breasts

the real "cinnamon" is only avail in the UK but there are a few breeders here in the states that are working on other colors.

your bird also carries a recessive white gene in it, as you can tell from the white under the beak. good canidate to start making tux's. just find a white that has a recessive dark range.

From the pics it looks like a hen, but if you actually see it crow it is a boy, hens are usually bigger than the cock birds this bird looks large but I have nothing to compare her with can we see your other birds? she appears to have a few feathers missing from her head like she is being mounted? one easy way of testing is to remove him/her from the group so she can't see them and test the response, if she makes a quiet chirupping sound like a cricket it's a girl
