Hi all! I'm new to all this so I need some advice. My family and I are purchasing a home next month. It's up the mountain on 1.3 acres. It's bordered by woods and state game lands with one permanent neighbor on one side and part time neighbors on the other. We'd like to start a small flock of chickens for two reasons. We love eggs and go through a lot so we need good layers (preferably large eggs). We want them to be free range during the day (penned at night). we also have 3 dogs, 2 kids and a cat so we want tick/bug control. We live in central pa so winters can be harsh so something that will be cold Hardy. What breed or breeds do you suggest we get (and how many)? Also, any advice you can give me would be great. Thanks!

Welcome to BYC! I read somewhere on here that you should get two laying hens per person. Not sure if that's accurate but it's what I went with. Having kids I just went to the hatchery's website and let everybody pick a breed from a list of good to high production breeds. Hope that helps a little!

Hi and welcome from Lancashire, NW England. Good luck with your new flock, may you have many many happy hours with your girls.

The best way to get info specific to your location and climate would be "Where am I, where are you," thread - then post on your state thread. People there would have a better idea of what does well and even what type of coop is best for your weather. You may even find others near you to purchase stock from and see how they grow them out.
