What breed or gender?

Great point of distinction about the feathers vs. the lace, Sonoran Silkies. Dove has always been one of my favorites - very calm demeanor, very feminine. She's one I sold as a pullet - so is the puff-cheeked Ameraucana-looking one. I'll be making good on that mistake.

What would you call Dove's coloring? I just love it and have never seen anything like it (not that I've seen much in the way of chickens). I think she's an Ameraucana mix as well, but her cheeks are so flat. She has a nice pea comb, though.

The darker red one is a hen, flyingmonkeypoop.

She's my year-old Red Leghorn, and I love her reliability as a layer! I can't cuddle her like my other girls, but she talks to me all the time and I know we're pals. (Silly, aren't I?)

I'm uploading photos of the other 3 Production Reds. I think I have only one pullet - the one roosting in the photos. Tell me if I'm right.

I'll call Barton Feed in Barton, Oregon, to see if they'll make good on the problem. It has been so hard to find laying hens or starter pullets in Oregon, I drove an hour each way to get those 4 - or rather 4 laying hens that they sold out from under me after promising to hold them when I left the house, which is when I got stuck with the "pullets." Now laying hens or pre-layers (5 mos.) are going for $20!

My images uploaded too darkly, so hopefully you can at least see the one roosting, which I think is my one pullet among the production reds.

Tomorrow I'm picking up 5 8-wk. gold sex-links at $10 a pop. I've got to get my egg count up. I only have six layers, only 3 of which are 6-a-weekers, then 3 3-or-so-a-weekers,plus an early, sporadic layer.

What does that song say? "Pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and start all over again."

Gee, if chickens are selling for that price, I'd be thinking about getting myself a bator or some broodies.

BTW, Dove is a VERY pretty girl, don't know what that color is but I want one like her!

You got that right, New Adventure! I'd do it in a heartbeat if I weren't facing some new health issues.

You'd think Oregon, of all places, would have plenty of chickens but there is a BYC mania going on here and everyone's talking about it at the feed stores, Home Depot, anywhere people buy stuff for chicken coops or chicken care.

I was just on Craigslist and there are plain ol' birds going for $25! Someone's selling 2-year-olds for $20!

My Barred Rock is getting broody and I was all set to make her work on some fertilized RIR eggs when I got the health issue thing. So I'll get the 8-week sexlinks and save the more intense project for when I know how things will work out.

The guy that sold me Dove had Ameraucana hens in with a Delaware, 2 RIRs, and an Ameraucana roo, so she's a mix that might not be repeated often. Man, I love her colors!
