Try getting one each of several different breeds and see what you like. I've got a Rhode Island Red (RIR), Barred Plymouth Rock (BR), and Black Sex-Link (BSL aka Black Star). The BSL is a fantastic layer, though the other 2 aren't laying yet, making the basis of comparison virtually nil.

The BSL & BR are very friendly birds. They hop up in my lap when I'm outside and follow me all over the yard. The RIR isn't very friendly, though it's hard to know if that's due to breed or her individual personality.

There's a breed matching tool at www.mypetchicken.com. Try it and see what it matches you with!

this is what mypetchicken says-

Australorp
Delaware
Faverolle
Plymouth Rock
Rhode Island
Star
Sussex
Wyandotte

ooh! I like the wyandotte, columbian rock hen, black Plymouth rock, speckled sussex is nice but would like more color and black star...if they are more iridescent IRL

Barred Plymouth Rocks are pretty, fantastic layers usually, friendly and curious. They are my fav breed, overall. I have some Ameraucanas, though unless you go to a breeder, you will have Easter Eggers, who vary in temperament more. My black, blue and splash Ameraucanas are lap chickens. I do have an Easter Egger hen, though she is probably a cross of two standard Ameraucana colors since she came from a breeder, and not a true mutt chicken. She lays extra large blue green eggs and is very quiet.
Hatchery Delawares are a risk. They have been outcrossed by hatcheries and some are downright mean.

Merry CHRISTmas y'all

That is my Blue Orpington, Suede. He has his own trio of blue lovelies in his own coop. My two laying flock roosters are Barred Rocks and I have a third one, a pet who is crippled and stays in his own area.

The best thing to do if you want to know for sure what the city code is ask the animal control people to email a copy of ordinances for poultry in your area. When I asked them to do that all of the sudden they started back peddeling and said they weren't really sure and that I should contact the city council to get a copy of the ordinances.

It doesn't matter what they tell you verbally. It's what is in the books in writing that they will go by if there is a problem.

Silkies silkies silkies... as you can see I am owned
