Hello all,
I have a flock of three (used to be five), 2 black Australorps and 1 buff Orpington (lost two orpingtons to predators). All about eight months old. I am going to add three new chicks this week. I am getting 2 Welsummers and one other. The place where I am getting them only has 2 Welsummers. I need help deciding on what breed the third should be. The place I am getting them also has Brown leghorns, White leghorns, Cuckoo marans, Buff brahmas, RI Reds, Silver laced wyandottes, and Golden laced wayndottes. I am not sure they will all be available but that is what they originally had listed. My current chickens all get along for the most part and are very sociable. They come running when we go outside and follow us around when we are working in the yard. Oddly enough the buff Orpington is my meanest girl. She doesn't love being handled and likes to attack my feet when I am walking. But she will still come to me when I call and is fine when I do pick her up.
Any way, I am confident that the Welsummers will be fine additions. For the third I have narrowed it down to a Cuckoo Maran, a RI Red, or one of the Wyandottes. For the most part the reviews on all of these breeds are good. My two concerns are that some people report these breeds as being aggressive in a mixed flock, and I want the least tendency toward broody. So, any recommendations?
Oddly enough there are not a lot of people selling chicks on Craigslist right now. Last year at this time there were tons. If I could find someone selling them I would try to pick up an Orpington, Australorp , or even an Ameraucana or Easter Egger.
