I'm looking for a dual purpose homestead breed. I'm looking for a bird that is pretty good at fending for itself. The hens go broody and are good mothers and the roosters have moxie. At present I'm looking at Cornish or Dominiques. Any other breeds I should be considering?

Where are you located? If up north, Chanteclers are a great breed for that. Good foragers, meaty, good winter layers, and decently broody.

Agreed. Take climate into consideration. Large combed breeds will be heat hardy- breeds like leghorns, sussex, Rhode Island Red, and Australorps. Small combed breeds will be cold hardy- like Wyandottes, EEs, and Opringtons.
