I was thinking today of building another coop and i was thinking about getting a breed of chicken and sell hatching eggs. I would only want to do this if i knew i could make money. What breeds are good to sell hatching eggs from. I guess what i am asking is what breeds are in high demand and sell quickly and are also good layers. It can be bantam or standard. Also let me know if you sell hatching eggs and you prefer one breed over another and why...

Thanks

You can make money selling any breed, provided you have good quality, knowledge, and passion for the birds.

What breeds you get depends on how much you want to spend. Blue Laced Red Wyandottes are still selling pretty well, Light Coronation are selling well, nice strains of Wheaten Ameraucanas sell well (a dozen eggs went for $80~ yesterday on here). I'll spend $40+ on a dozen nice Delaware or Barred Rock eggs, and recently bought a dozen Barnevelder eggs for $60.

It's not really the breed that sells well, it's the individual's quality and their ability to convince others they can't live without this breed.

Get the breed that you like and want to raise. Don't count on making much money....what sells well for a couple of years isn't guarenteed to still be selling well 3 or 4 years down the line.

Get the best of whatever breed you decide on.....cull to keep your flock up to the standard. If you have good examples of the breed people will want to buy from you.

Have them because you like them.....not because you hope to make money off them.

I really was thinking about doing something like Delawares but i know that they arent all that rare so i thought that i wouldnt make that much money. I really like ameraucana's too. Is the wheaten color the color that sells the best? I also really like the temperment of the ameraucana's i have seen and since these birds will be around and me and my family i think they should be friendly. I really dont want any game birds like pumpkin hulsey. I have heard too many bad stories about how mean the roosters are. Are there any reccomendations on how to get high quality breeder stock. Would you buy from someone here on Byc or would you search the interent for breeders?

Also, in your opinion is there money to be made in selling hatching eggs. Once you subtract the price of building another coop and buying food and the amount of time you spend improving and taking care of them?

I really feel like if i got a breed i really liked i wouldnt feel as bad about not making money. What other colors are there in ameraucana's.

Honestly I look the LEAST forward to someone getting into a breed just for the profit. . . .

Take Blue Wheaten Ameraucanas for example. These days they seem to sell pretty well because of their blue eggs, but really, that's it! In reality they need a LOT of work on color, especially in females, they need work on the body, especially in males of a couple lines, and they need more attention for people who seriously love them, want to become good breeders, and want to show them. . . . Not people who just show pretty egg photos, sell them for top dollar, then roll out the next pretty eggs. It's often the same with Marans, which is why many people have doubts they'll be accepted in the APA anytime soon. . . Because too many people are breeding solely for pretty eggs.

I'm not singling anyone out when I say this, I'm just saying it happens way too much. I'd like to see more dedicated Ameraucana and Marans breeders, not pretty egg sellers.

I know it sounds like i am a terrible person trying to get a breed just for profit. i DO want to make profit but i am all for improving the breed. If i dont make a profit there is no reason to be getting them besides me just trying to improve the breed. To improve the breed dont you have to be large-scale. I was only wanting about 10 altogether but to improve lines i would need to get a lot more to pick and choose which to cull and keep etc. Is this right? Do you have to be large-scale to improve breeds or can i still do that with just having around 10?

I am not thinking of doing this just for " pretty eggs " i already have easter eggers and i do like the blue eggs but that is not my main goal. I dont have to get ameraucana's i just like the breed because of 1. their laid back attitude ( most of the time ) and 2. for the colors of their bodies ( wheaten, lavendar etc. )

Can someone please tell me all the colors that the ameraucana's come in. I know of lavendar, wheaten, and blue wheaten. What else am i missing?

Ok i think i have narrowed down my choices to blue wheaten, wheaten and splash wheaten. I really like those colors the best. I have read on the internet if I wanted 100% blue wheaten offspring i would need to breed splash wheaten to wheaten. Is this correct?

I also am unsure on what the differences in color is on the wheaten ameraucana and the blue wheaten ameraucana. Can someone please tell me the difference.

Also, In your opinion Illia which breed would you consider needing the most help? If i wanted to breed to improve the quality, which colors should i work with?

Understand you wanting a breed you like.........but DON'T believe all that crap about game rooster being mean , they are the most tame of any roosters....just not with other roosters. not toward people or kids. You will find more mean roosters in any other breeds before game chickens.

Reason when they fought them years ago , those guys would not breed from man fighters
