I'm thinking the OP is correct, and they are both a mix. While New Zealand and American Sable could be part of the mix, so could breeds like Satin, Rex, etc, that are in the same size range and also come in those colors. If the person who they came from "had lots of rabbits" and didn't say what they breeds were, they probably were breeding whatever to whatever and not keeping separate breeds.

Incidentally, it looks to me like the darker rabbit is a color called a sable marten; that isn't a showable color in any large American breed.
