Yeah well I want to add border collies to that too! In his little itty bitty brain our border collie may think he's herding them, but if you ask the chickens he's scaring the daylights out of them.
My cockers (bird dogs BTW) are quite good around the birds. Its all about the training you start with. One of the cockers is very birdy and will set any bird/squirel/kitty if its in the yard. He will walk up to the birds very slowly and the birds arent bothered by him.
But the same birds were brooded in the house during the early part of winter while their part of the coop was being built, so he was told repeatly to leave the chickens alone and BTW he is 8 yrs old.

Youre right border collies and heelers and aussies, are herd dogs, and its in thier instinct to herd. Its up to us to train them when its time to herd and when its not. A good herd dog (properly trained) will not herd untill told to.
I have been breeding, showing and training Cane Corso Mastiffs for 8 years. I have had chickens for almost 1 year. The chickens were kept in a coop for about 5 months, then I decided to let them free range on my property. My younger pup will chase one when they are first let out of the house, but no problems. My neighbor is amazed. Some pics.
my austrailian shepherd used to like to chase them for fun if hed get the chance but not hurt them-he does the same thing with my cats. he would sometimes heard the chicks into their brooder if they got out. well the other day i went down stairs and i had 6 younger chicks 2-4 weeks old. And I could only find one for about an hour and it was soaked with saliva and petrified!! poor baby. Hes fine now, just took him about an hour to get over the shock. About an hour later I found the other 5 stuck between the wall and the brooder. He didnt injure any of them he just wants someone to play with (he is now an only dog). But, still, you cant trust any of them. Hes supposed to be a herding breed too and good with livestock. But, then again hearding breeds like to chase anything that moves!
