Awe I am new to Turkeys. I'm also new to Guineas. I have 11 of them. I also have some chickens and ducks. My newest though are Ayam Cemani chickens. They are 19weeks old.

I ADORE turkeys! Between my boyfriend and I we currently have 13! I have 6 blacks, 1 chocolate, 1 Narragansett, and 5 blue slates :) what breeds do you guys have and like???? :)

We got two hens recently and six poults. The hens and two poults are bronze and four poults are bb whites. The bb white poults are the most comical... and LOVE peas! I set out a small dish of frozen peas early afternoon for the poults and omg those rapturkens won't even let me get the water in the bowl and they are grubbin away. The bronze poults are most skittish of us but do love peas also... i just toss theirs to them.

Surprisingly the whites are still foragin very well at two months. :). I figured they would be like the cornishx we had and by this time they were horribly lazy and only wanted the food trough.

The hens are comin around to us. They love them some watermelon and maters. They hear me comin up the way and start trottin to get to the gate for their cool treats. One of them likes me to bathe under her wings i found out. She is funny! The other one hubby calls squatter cause at night when we go to put them in she squats and he has carry her sorry ass to bed lol! I think it just a game to her. Hahahahah.

I love hot neautiful the slates are though. Maybe next year we will get a few. But for now we are lookin for a tom for then hens. We didnt get him at the auction we got the other at. :/

Awww! I wish you guys had gotten heritage turkeys since you guys love them and want them for pets. We had a broad breasted white tom last year. He lived to be 8 months old and got way too big. Now we have all heritage turkeys! I love mine they are SOOO sweet and such good pets :) they love watermelon and mealworms!!!!

I had BBB & BBW once. Even though they forage with the heritage turkeys they still eventually gained way to much weight for their frame/s. I ended up butchering them all ex elf the runt BBB. I had carcasses of 48-57lbs. 1 BBB carcass weighed in at 52 lbs, eviserated(gutted) and skinned and I took off the wings after the "drumette" as wel as the neck. I don't know how much he weighed whole.
I too prefer heritage breed turkeys although the wild breeds are flighty and independant. I like the Blue Slate I have for aesthetics as well as utilitarian but apparently there is a strain that has a almond shaped eye, as opposed to round eye, that does not fair well in breeding. They are known for infertility. I don't recal if it's the toms or the hens or both. Also apparent is that I have the almond eyed strain. I like the pix you guys/gals posted. I like blacks now too:love....:th..darn it! I guess I be getting some next year.
Hey, if someone likes black turkeys check out Artisan Gold.
I still like Louisiana Black/Eastern black wild, RioGrande wild, Goulds wild & Merriams wild just because they are the original turkey breeds of the entire world. But then, like I said I like Bourban, Palm, Pheonix & Sweetgrass.
Do any of you know anyone that has Sweetgrass? Any word on how they are(tameness, domesticated'ness' and health issues). I have read some literature but I haven't found too much.
:rolleyes:Although I've stated I don't really care about "personality" I do let my heritage breeds roam and I still have 1 young dotr and 2 little grandotrs that enjoy the outdoors.

Yea you should really get black turkeys! These guys have AMAZED me. Mine are so sweet and super pets cause I raised them up to be that way, I wanted pets. :) and I absolutely adore them and their personalitys :love and I like blue slates too I have five young ones, about a month and a half old at my boyfriends house. I haven't seen them in about a month but they are growing up and doing well! :) I haven't heard anything about sweetgrass turkeys, but I really like their physical appearance and would love to see where they are located! My black turkeys walk around outside with me whenever I'm out there with them. I'll let them out of their pen and let them roam, they always stay by me, and then I'll walk them back to their pen afterwards :D
