I was also going to say that you should get lavender orpingtons. Perhaps a white leghorn? Or a Plymouth Rock like this one?

I had one, but I sold her as part of my flock refocusing.

She was the friendliest bird in my flock. Not a lap pet, because I don't raise them that way, but always near me and incredibly curious.

Australorps, Cream Legbars, or Olive Eggers are nice ones.


My Sussex are over-friendly and hardy, but they are loud and awful layers.

My Dominique is snuggly and will peck me if I don’t pay attention to her, but she is skittish and flighty. She is also loud and an awful layer.

Yes, nice and active.

And a good flock citizen.

My only issue with her was that her eggs were smaller than I want. Solid medium to barely large when I want large to extra large.

They do have great personalities, for the most part. I just wanted to write out some pros and cons, from my personal experience, to help you make your choice.


Australorps are great, and I’m sure you would really like them. I would suggest them out of all the others. They are generally very nice, mellow, gorgeous, hardy birds. They are great layers as well.

Cream Legbars are one of my favorites. They are very friendly, hardy birds that have gorgeous crests and lay blue eggs. They are decent layers.

I would suggest Cochins if you weren’t looking for birds built for all weather types. Mine did really well in the heat this year, but they are more built for cold weather. They are super mellow and friendly, gorgeous, and decent layers. I love Cochins.
