Hey, I have been noticing mites again . I have been trying to learn what kind these are? I see them on the outside and inside the coop. Lots of gray elongated, very fast mites everywhere! And a tiny spider like that color mite. The rust one is new (until now ). I am going to treat the coop and girls tomorrow. But any ideas what species they are?

also has anyone ever tried cleaning a coop out with dawn dish soap/water solution? I know they kill fleas on kittens. Just curious if that could work on the coop too.

For mites I use permethrin but repeat weekly treatments are necessary for 3 or 4 weeks because it does not kill the pests eggs but will as they hatch out so repeated treatments are necessary. Keep the cats away while treating. I tried DE but had no luck with it. I do use poultry dust in the nest boxes. Also there is no egg withdrawal period. Good luck...

There was a similar thread a while back and it turned out to be Springtails. And Mites don’t have antennas
You are right, a lot of them are springtails, but I did find some northern fowl mites too. They were hiding inside the coop and the shavings. The springtails are everywhere.

thank you , I tried this and it did help a lot on the springtails. It seemed to kill them on contact which was great. But even after a month, they still kept popping up. The northern fowl mites kept walking even after I soaked them in this. I added some 7 garden dust under the shavings and the nest box which seemed to have helped keep the numbers down.
I did use ivermectin on the hens and boy did they seem instantly much more happier and started laying eggs again continuously. Unfortunately that did cause me to with drawl from eating them. I think I would do that again in the winter.

I’m just not a fan of bugs crawling everywhere😅. But I really wish I could find a solution to get rid of the springtails propping up everywhere. I believe the sparrows are causing the more problem and I do not know how to detour them.

You can clean the coop with dawn .:)

Permethrin works on a lot of different pests. I had a lot of flies in and around my coops. Since I was spraying the flies are gone too. One thing that many people do is they don't mix the permethrin strong enough. I use the 0.50% solution and it has been working. I need to do another application but have put it off because of all of the rain we have been getting. We've already have had over 15 inches of rain this month and the month isn't over.
