My little Ameracauna hen seems to have an enlarged (and hard) crop. The Chicken health handbook says to empty the crop out by making an incision (clean of course) through the skin, into the crop and empty contents. Isolate bird and keep wound clean.

Has anyone tried this? Do I need to take her to the $300.00 per hour avian vet?
Your insight would be most appreciated.......

I have never had to treat it, but there is a ton of information on BYC regarding how to treat it. Oil soaked bread, ACV, red wine, and massage to name a few. There are some people that have done the crop surgery, but that has been after other treatments have failed. There are some good posts on BYC about the surgery and how to do it. Some have worked and some have not. I don't think I would jump into the surgery without trying other options first.

Good luck
