what can chew through chicken wire, kill chickens, but not eat them?

Dogs will. Chickenwire is not very predator proof at all. Even chain link can be chewed through by a determined dog.

What is your setting (rural, in town, etc)?

2 acres in town. fenced in backyard where coop and run are located.

Fox, raccoon, skunk.

Skunks usually dig and you can smell if they were there...
Raccoons can...
Foxes can...

I would guess raccoon. They did the same thing to my dad's chickens it did take some of the chickens, but it left some of them dead in the coop
