I have some scared chicks and I know time will help. But when I reach for them in the brooder they run away. So I need to bribe my little chicks. Any Ideas?
Since week 1 my chicks have LOVED boiled egg. My chicks, now 8 weeks attack anything that's white...I'll probably have to stop feeding eggs as they might eat their own when they lay. Mealworms work great too, they are cheap when you buy online in bulk. Not to mention they are easily cultured! If you want to tame skittish chicks, mealworms are the way to go! (Offer grit when you give them anything besides starter, egg, and yogurt)
My chicks are 1 week old. I started giving them chopped up hard boiled egg when they were 3 days. They LOVE it. When they hear me approaching the brooder the come running as fast as they can
Hmm.. I'll have to try the chopped up boiled egg! Two out of the three chicks that I currently have run away from me when I put my hand in their brooder
I probably should try spending more time with them. It's just hard with my two little ones. They need to be VERY closely monitored around the chicks. I usually have to put them up soon after taking them out because my son just gets way too excited over them.
Just kidding-the hard boiled egg or some yogurt with a bit of feed mixed in is always a hit at my house.
Don't worry, they don't hate you. Mine treated me like an axe murderer for weeks before they finally came around.
Yes, I know what you mean about the little ones. We have been giving hard boiled egg for about a week now, they are two weeks old and they LOVE it. They seem calmer after treats too. One of our easter eggers fell asleep in my son's hands yesterday. he's 4. It was the cutest thing ever. I have the kids (6 and 4) sit down with their legs stretched out and put the chick on their hand between their legs. That seems to work pretty well.
Mine like cooked eggs, but yesterday they discovered chopped tomatoes. They grab and run, and then play tug-o-war. I think the red color helps. They will take them from my hand, and the eggs they would not.
We have had great success (even our loud 4 year old) with putting yogurt on a finger and dipping it in their starter crumbles. They go nuts and peck it right off of your finger (Even the scaredy cats of the flock). It has worked wonders for them to get used to us. Of course, while they are eating off of your finger, I will pet them with the other fingers. They all come to the side of the brooder when we look in. Good luck
