What can I plant in my run that will grow quickly and give cover...

I wouldn't trust any of my chickens to 'chance' by Not putting up a top of the run fencing. But as far as shade & overall ornamental decoration I'd use pampas grass or ornamental grass. They grow Very well & establish Very good roots (I got my 1st start from my Uncle that had burned yard leaves over the pampas grass -trying- to kill it thru the summer months). Luckily it survived & after letting it grow a summer I split it several times & now about every other yr I split my plants of 5ft tall pampas grass. So I now have a very ornamental beautiful long row of tall grass. Providing a beautiful living privacy 'fence'. It grows tassels in the fall, & dries out in the winter, looking like large pompoms covered with snow in the winter. When about march or may come around (after the last frost is over) the dried grass left is either cut or burnt off to about 6inches above the ground. & as the weather warms it grows very quickly back to it's full size. I have no green thumb, so this grass must be foolproof for me to be successful with it

For outside your run you might try mulberry trees. They grow very fast and give shade in the hot weather. Plus mulberries are pretty tasty! Our trees grew over a foot this season and they were in bad shape when planted. They looked like tiny sticks.

Grape vines grow fast also.
