I have two chickens that I believe have worms..they are acting lethargic...they have watery stools..decreased appetites. I don't have a vet near by(I've called everywhere wtihin 100 miles and no one accepts chickens)...I want to deworm and read on BYC that people use Wazine...but when i called about that i was told that they had discontinued it. I've been reading that a lot of the dewormers aren't safe for weak or sick chickens..what do I use that's safe and won't kill her while i try to treat the worms..that i can buy online. Thanks

Welcome to BYC. The 2 different wormers that I would recommend are Valbazen and SafeGuard Liquid Goat Wormer. They must be given to each chicken orally. Dosage for Valbazen is 1/2 ml given orally for an average size chicken, and repeated in 10 days. SafeGuard dosage is 1/4 ml per pound of weight given once and again in 10 days for roundworms. To treat capillary (thread) worms or gapeworms, give it for 5 consecutive days. For either wormer, toss eggs for 14 days after the last dose if that sort of thing worries you.

You can find Valbazen online and in a few farm store chains. SafeGuard is sold at TSC and online.

A third choice that I have used is Wormout Gel which is put in the water for 2 straight days. Some recommend repeating that in 14 days. It is found online.

Out of all three of those..which would you think is safer? I don't want to hurt her or make her worse because she's a little weak? Thanks for the help

I think that both Valbazen and SafeGuard would be safe. I have used Valbazen in my hens for years with no issues, and I like that it only requires 2 doses for most worms. Use 1/4 ml for a bantam, 1/2 ml for a 5-6 pound hen, and up to 3/4 ml for a very large hen or rooster. Safeguard is sometimes easier to find locally and is less expensive.

Thank you...I'll definitely get the Valbazen...I looked it up online and it says its for cattle sheep and goats? I'm assuming its the correct product. Do you know how long it will take her to feel better after using? Thanks again for all of the help
