Hi I have an over weight dog and I know that food is the most thing that makes a dog over weight and I'm taking her to the vet Tuesday but I was wondering what types of ceases can make a dog over weight thanks

What breed? height at the withers? Do you have pictures?

Exercise and portion control and the top things. The type of food is also extremely important, Old Roy, Purina, Blue, and any food with grain causes extreme weight gain due to inappropriate ingredients.

Take a hard look at the food you are feeding your dog.
Is it grain free?
Or at least “junk grain” free?

Dogs have no business eating food with wheat or corn as an ingredient.

Might as well toss them sugar cubes to eat and bacon grease to wash it down with.

Canned no salt added green beans, raw carrots and celery are great treats which give satisfaction in taste and crunch with few calories.
A few heaping spoonful of canned pumpkin added to their kibble with enough water to stir into a gravy consistency, adds fiber to their diet, helps them feel fuller longer, and bulks up their stool.

Please don't let the vet sell you that awful Science Diet diet food. I bought it years and years ago and really regretted my stupid error. It was wildly expensive, and the primary ingredient was peanut hulls! My dog did really badly on it, had no energy, and I ended up throwing the rest of the bag away. Far better to feed a really good food (and less of it).

Exercise is really important too, and watch the treats. Don't buy those awful milkbone type things (if you have some left over, break them into halves or quarters), instead, get some dehydrated meat or liver, and only give little pieces. Dogs often love veggies too! Carrot pieces, bits of broccoli stems, pieces of cucumber, anything crunchy. Remember, it's the thought that counts with treats. Oh and watch that you aren't giving the dog leftover junk from people's plates. If dawg likes to clean the plates, just remove any unhealthy stuff first!

Dogs are carnivores and don't need carbs. Store bought dog food is mostly carbs. Best thing is a raw diet, but if not that, then a grain free dog food. Also, the dog could be hypothryoid which could cause weight gain. I have two dogs that tend to put on a little weight in the hot, hot days of summer when they run around a lot less. I just feed a little less at those times.

Have your vet run a blood panel that includes thyroid levels. That is the main medical cause for dogs gaining weight. Have your dog's joints checked, low activity levels can be due to pain. If everything else checks out, reduce food, cut waaaay back on snacks, and gradually increase exercise.

I fed all my dogs, all 6+ of them, Old Roy for years, free choice 24/7 from self-feeders; never had a weight problem, even with the inactive ones.
