Today I went out to the coop and retrieved eggs and one of them had a very soft shell and the egg felt like jelly. I know it was from of my buff hens. They have been laying for about 6 mos and this a first ever for me.

What causes the mushy shell?

was there a shell at all, or just a membrane, that happens sometime, if its once and awhile don't worry if it starts to happen alot try to find out who it laying them.

Yup, it happens from time to time, especially when they are young. It sure makes for a weird egg. I wouldn't worry about it unless it happens a lot, in which case you either have a calcium deficiency or a hen with a reproductive problem. But once in a while is no big deal.
