I have a four year old RIR rooster that came up lame yesterday. He is limping badly on one foot. He's perching at night, but he's standing on one foot at any other time and I even found him resting in the shavings this afternoon. The only thing I can see on his foot is that the entire foot and one claw is swollen. It isn't hot, and it doesn't look anything like any photos of bumble foot that I can see. There are no black dots, no evidence of infection. Anyone have any ideas? I like this boy very much, and I don't want to cull him, but he's clearly in a lot of pain.

Thanks!

They are as subject to a host of medical problems as we are. He could have a clot above the swelling. He could have sprained the leg somehow, maybe got a foot caught on something, or simply twisted it as we'd twist an ankle. He could develop arthritis or gout. Or probably about 50 other things. I would isolate him in an smaller area with lots of soft bedding for a day or two, to encourage him to rest it. Hopefully time and rest will improve it.

Here is a link to a good document about a host of leg and foot problems. Good luck to you both!

Thanks for the link. I googled and googled and didn't come up with anything helpful. I'll put Bruce in a crate for a bit and maybe some enforced rest will help the poor guy. I don't get too attached to most birds, but this guy's been with us for a while and has been a wonderful Alpha roo for many years.

Hmm, makes me wonder if he is lame from attacking / running off some critter. Sure hope he gets over whatever it is!

Thanks. Me, too.

I'm usually pretty hard-headed about poultry, and I have a group of Cornish X going to the processor next week, but I couldn't eat Bruce.
