What cheap dog food do you recommend?

Think it's $35-40 for the big bag. Crap I just bought some too lol.

Your dog socializing with others - wait til they're up on their shots. All it takes is one unvaccinated dog for trouble...

A lot of what people consider "lower quality" food is just fine for dogs. In fact, a lot of the more expensive food brands tend to use tricks to make you think they are better and contain more meat or whatever, but it's amazing how tricky they can be. Generally, meat meal has a lot more bang for your buck (and better nutrition content) than whole fresh meat. Whenever they say "whole fresh" that is wet weight. So the brands can label the food with that as the first ingredient but when dried, that "whole meat" can often amount to less than half of the meat meal. Also, whole veggies is another ploy that people often fall for. They again use amounts that allow them to label the bag to show there are lots of different things, but many veggies have no proven benefit for dogs.

That said, a "c" rating is not necessarily a bad rating as people tend to believe. It means the food contains all the necessary ingredients a dog needs to survive. Some dogs do better on certain brands than others and sometimes it is just a trial and error thing!

We've had great results with Iams food for our cats and some people hate it. Luckily there are lots of choices for all types of people! Definitely don't feel bad about using a brand others down upon. There is often nothing wrong with them!

a good rule of thumb (like Chickerdoodle said) is to check the ingredient list. You want a named meat meal as the first ingredient. Avoid anything that contains a meat "by-product meal". Try to avoid foods where corn is in the first 5 ingredients - corn is largely indigestible for dogs (and humans) so little of it is actually used though it increases the protein percentage of the kibble, making it look better by the numbers.

Secondly, get the best food that your dog does well on. Some dogs don't do well on rich foods..

Third, make sure you factor in other elements besides the cost of a bag of kibble. Feeding a quality food means that you will feed less, meaning each bag lasts longer (30 lbs of Victor at $35 lasts almost 6 weeks. 35 lbs of Ol' Roy would last me half that long). Feeding a higher quality food means a healthier dog (less vet visits). Less shedding. Less grooming and shedding. Longer healthier life.

All kibbles have to meet a minimum standard to be sold to the public. Look at it as eating Hot Dogs and Bologna for the rest of your life vs eating a healthier homecooked meal.
