I free range my birds. We lose birds every year to owls or hawks. Once we started locking them up at night the owl problem stopped. But a big hawk has noticed them now. I always keep lots of roosters. I chased the hawk off last night and one of my dogs went after it the other day. It was calling last night to something, so i'm betting i'll have a breeding pair come spring. Oh goody. I would say my RIR, brown leghorns are doing the best so far. I've lost EE, welsummer, buff orpington. If the hawk doesn't move on i may be looking into getting some guineas or geese as watch birds for the flock. Birds of all the same color or non white only birds are better for free range. It will be interesting to see if my two white roos make it through the summer. Maybe the hawk will take some of our feral cats. The owl was killing kittens.
