What chicken breeds are the best egg layers?

Really? How many eggs does she lay you a day?

Do you mean how many eggs does she lay a week? Chickens only lay one egg a day......

My best overall layers are probably my RIR, Barred Rocks, Naked Necks, and EE's. My Sexlinks lay well too for the first couple of years, then they slack off. I also have that they are not that thrifty.

The best breed of layer is the leghorn IMO. After that there are many that are good to excellent.

Crosses like the sex links come close. The crosses aren't breeds though, as they don't breed true. A first generation cross can lay very well, but breed them and the hens in the next generation usually don't lay as well. I have several buff Rock over GLW hens that have laid as well as my golden sex links and better then their parent breeds. If I raise the next generation it is an even bet whether they lay very well or just as good as the parent breeds.

I had one set on sex links that laid very well for two years, then they just stopped. Which if I was a commercial operation would be alright, but as a backyard operation isn't what I hoped for. So they were thrifty as advertised for the first two years then very unthrifty.

I have a few red sexlinks. They lay like clockwork. Sadly they are getting old. 14 months now, this will probably be their last summer.
