I was interested in know what breed of chicken lays the big speckled egg?

I bought these eggs at the health food store and called the man that sells them and he said all he has is Rhode Island Reds and White Rock mix.

I thought there was another pure breed that laid the big speckled egg, does anyone know? I could just order a breed that always lays speckled eggs instead of having a cross breed.

Thanks

One of my cuckoo marans lays a spotted egg. The spots are not large like your egg but are consistant on each egg she lays. I think her 'paint brush' is really a spray painter for applying the dark coating on the egg before she lays it.

Actually, any brown egg layer can lay a spotted egg. Generally you will see this sort of thing during the beginning or end of the egg laying cycle, as the "spray nozzle" sputters a bit when laying the color down.

Brown eggs are white shells with brown color applied (unlike blue eggs that are blue all the way through.) If you crack a brown egg you will see it is white inside, the brown pigment is applied to the outside of the shell only, while a blue egg is blue on the inside too. Green eggs will be blue on the inside as well.

As I understand it, it's protoporphyrin that creates the brown color, and biliverdin that creates the blue.

So a RIR could certainly produce spotted eggs, just as a Marans can. I currently have a Buckeye pullet who is laying spotted eggs, I think they're cute as can be.
