And here's why I ask. I purchased 4 hens 4 weeks ago today. In that time, I have dealt with cannibalism (separated the 2 leghorns from the 2 RIR which necessitated purchasing a second pre-fab coop, extra expense) -
prolapse (last Tuesday one of the leghorns had a prolapse, which I learned from reading the great info at this site, and then when it appeared it wasn't going to get any better, took her to the vet this morning to be euthanized, another extra expense) --
and on that same Tuesday the 2nd leghorn crawled into her nesting box and has not gotten out. This morning I sort'a made her get out, then she cackled at me loudly like she was bawling me out but did scratch & peck and eat and drink. But as soon as I gave her access, she was back in the nest. I think she is "brooding" (if that's the right term) but I want to be sure. The past 2 mornings her comb has been a bit dis-colored, but has returned to normal as the day went on. But her feet are gray. The RIR have flesh colored feet (never imagined I would notice or care about the difference). And so, are gray feet normal for a leghorn? Just want to be sure she isn't suffering from some disease, which would not surprise me at this point. I'm thinking this city-girl should have let all the farmers raise the chickens!!! Thank you for any info!!!
